Rubrics

Jan 12

Rubrics are tools that we use to evaluate student performance. It consists of these components:
• Criteria – these characteristics come from learner outcomes (I can statements) and are organized into categories for students
• Fixed scale - identifies levels of performance – may be a 4 point scale that use word descriptors like Excellent, Proficient, Adequate, Limited
• Detailed description of student performance at each level

Students use rubrics to help them become more thoughtful judges of their own work. Teachers use rubrics to help them make consistent judgments of student work.
Rubrics are shared with students when assessment tasks are assigned. When students have a clear idea of what the teacher is looking for at the start, they are better able to meet the targets set for them. Everyone wins!
